Saharsa: Police on June 8, 2017, recovered the half burnt body of a married woman Puja Devi from a maize filed at village Fatehpur under Kashnagar police outpost under Sonbersa Raj police station in Saharsa district.

Puja, who was married to Pawan Tanti, son of Ganesh Tanti of village Fatehpur in March 2009, had been missing after May 22, 2017. She was daughter of Lalit Kumar Tanti of village Bagh Naulakha under Naya Ramnagar police station in Munger district. Her family members alleged that she was killed by her in-laws after her failure to meet their dowry demand.

Lalit Kumar Tanti alleged that Puja’s in-laws were torturing her for dowry after her marriage. On May 22, 2017, Puja had informed her parents on phone that she was beaten up by her in-laws for dowry after which he had sent his two sons to Fatehpur. But, her in-laws told his sons that Puja had left home, said Lalit Tanti adding he himself visited Fatehpur on May 27, 2017, and spoke to his son-in-law Pawan Tanti and his family members and sought their help in locating her. On June 7, Lalit Tanti was informed by some residents of Fatehpur that Puja’s body was seen near the village middle school. On June  8, Lalit reached Fatehpur and found Puja’s body in a maize field and informed police about it. Kashnagar police have started investigation into the incident.
