Ara : A married woman was beaten up and later allegedly poisoned to death at village Salempur under Chandi police station in Bhojpur district on April 22, 2019, night, allegedly for a motorcycle and a gold chain in dowry.

Police brought the body over to Ara Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. The deceased was identified as Poonam Devi, 26, wife of Neeraj Kumar Yadav of village Salempur. A named FIR has been lodged by Chandi police station against four persons including Neeraj Kumar Yadav on the statement of the deceased’s father Nirmal Singh but no arrest has so far been made in this connection.

SHO, Chandi police station, Kuer Gupta said that Nirmal Singh of Salthar village under Udwantnagar police station had married his daughter Poonam Devi to Neeraj Kumar Yadav of Salempur village under Chandi police station in 2012 but she had no issue. Ever since the marriage, her in-laws were demanding a motorcycle and a gold chain but the parents of the deceased could not fulfil their demands. When their demand for dowry was not fulfilled, her in-laws finally assaulted her with traditional weapon and later poisoned her to death.

Neeraj Singh said that a villager informed him that his daughter was poisoned to death. Hearing the news, he and other family members rushed to Salempur village and informed the police. The SHO said that after the incident all the accused were  absconding. He said that police are investigating the matter and also conducting raids to arrest the named accused.
