Muzaffarpur : Shyamali Devi, 60, native of avillage under Goraul police station in Vaishali district, died at a private hospital at Muzaffarpur on February 15, 2018, morning, after accidently swallowing acid kept in a bottle given to her by staff of a private hospital when she asked for water to take medicines on February 14 evening. Shyamali Devi had undergone an eye surgery at a private hospital located under Brahmapura police station at Muzaffarpur on February 14 evening.
“After operation, the woman was given some medicines. When she asked for water to swallow the tablets with, a paramedical staff handed over a bottle thinking it to be full of water,” SHO, Brahmapura police station in Muzaffarpur district, Dharmendra Kumar said.
Shyamali Devi began crying loudly after drinking the acid following which the staff called the doctor who had performed the surgery. The woman was immediately rushed to a nursing home located nearby where she died on February 15 morning, the SHO said. ” We could not record the woman’s statement as she was not in a position to say anything. But, an FIR has been lodged against the doctor and staff concerned and action will be taken after investigation,”the SHO said.
According to Civil surgeon Dr Lalita Singh, prima facie it appears to be an instance of gross negligence on part of the medical professionals involved. Stern action will be taken after investigations are complete, she added.
