Patna : Freestyle wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Balali, Haryana, India, 23, won Gold Medal in 50 kg category at the Asian Games 2018 on August 20, 2018, defeating Japan’s Yuki Irie. It is first Gold Medal for India in women wrestling in Asian Games.

Vinesh had taken a 4-0 lead in the first round itself. Irie reduced the deficit by 2 points in the second round. But, Vinesh soon added 2 more points to her tally to win second Gold Medal for India in the 2018 Asian Games. Bajrang Punia had won first Gold Medal for India in freestyle wrestling in men’ category on August 19, 2018.

Vinesh had won Bronze Medal in 2014 Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea, in 48 kg category besides winning Gold Medals in both 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games (CWG) at Glasgow and Gold Coast respectively.

Vinesh is the cousin of top woman wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, who have won Gold Medals at Commonwealth Games in 55 kg category.
