Patna : World No 35 Fernando Verdasco, 35, Spain, upset World No 13 Karen Khachanov, 22, Russia, to enter the Round of 16 at Madrid Open, Spain, on May 9, 2019. World No 4 Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, also advanced to the Round of 16 beating World No 144 David Ferrer, 37, Spain, in the 2nd round on May 9. Ferrer, who will retire after this tournament, has won 27 career titles and had reached French Open final in 2013 besides reaching the Australian Open and US Open semi-finals twice each.

Verdasco beat Khachanov in three-sets 6-7, 6-1, 7-5 in second round. Verdasco fired 12 Aces in the match to 6 by Khachanov, the 11th seed. Verdasco committed 4 double faults in the match to 2 by Khachanov.  Verdasco broke Khachanov’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke his service only once. Verdasco also won 6 games in a row to 3 by Khachanov.

Verdasco will face World No 9 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, in the Round of 16. Verdasco has won 7 career titles and had reached the 4th round of French Open 7 times including in 2018 besides reaching the semi-finals of Australian Open in 2009.

Alexander Zverev beat David Ferrer 6-4, 6-1 in 2nd round firing 4 Aces. Zverev broke Ferrer’s service 5 times while the latter broke his service once. Zverev won 9 games in a row in the match to 3 by Ferrer. Zverev will face World No 52 Hubert Hurkacz, 22, Poland, in the Round of 16.
