Patna : World Number 8 Venus Williams, 37, US, defeated her younger sister and former World Number 1 Serena Williams 6-3, 6-2, on March 12, 2018, to enter the 4th round in Women’s section of Indian Wells WTA Masters 1000 tennis tournament at California, USA. Serena has made a comeback to the tennis after giving birth to her first child in 2017 and was playing her first competitive tennis tournament.
Serena had won Australian Open championship in 2017. It was 29th meeting between the two sisters with Serena leading 17-12 head to head. Venus is winner of seven Grand Slam titles. It was her first win over Serena since 2014.
Former World Number 1 Angeliq Kerber, Germany, the 10th seed, also entered the round of 16 defeating Elina Vesnina, Russia, 7-5, 6-2.
But, Carla Suarez Navarro, Spain, the 27th seed, stunned Number 4 seed Elina Svitolina, 23, Ukraine, 7-5, 6-3, to enter round of 16.
