Patna : NDA candiate and BJP leader M Menkaih Naidu, 68, was on August 5, 2017, elected the next  Vice -President of India defeating joint opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi by 272 votes. With this, the BJP has bagged both the posts of President and Vice-President India. BJP leader Ram Nath Kovind was elected President of India on July 20, 2017. The electoral college comprised both elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

A former BJP president and Union Minister, Naidu got 516 votes while Gopal Krishna Gandhi bagged only 244 votes. Out of 785 votes, 771 votes were cast in the poll. Naidu, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, will take oath of office on August 11. In the 2012 vice-presidential poll M Hamid Ansari had secured 490 votes while NDA candidate Jaswant Singh could get only 238 votes.

Gopal Krishna Gandhi, PM Narendra Modi, AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and Bihar  CM Nitish Kumar congratulated Naidu on his election as the Vice-president of India. Naidu comes from an agriculture background.
