Patna : Former legislator from Mahnar in Vaishali District in Norh Bihar Umesh Singh Kushwaha was on January 10, 2021, unanimously elected as Bihar JD(U) President, in a an apparent move by the party to strengthen its old “Luv-Kush” support base. Election of Kushwaha was ratified at the party’s state council and state executive meeting here.

Kushwaha replaces party veteran Bashistha Narayan Singh, MP, who while addressing the meting expressed his desire to relinquish the post of State JD(U) President on health ground. He proposed the name of Kushwaha for State JD(U) President post which was unanimously approved by members present at the meeting. CM Nitish Kumar had recently stepped down as the JD(U) National President and named his close confidant RCP Singh, MP,  as his successor.

Kushwaha contested the 2020 assembly elections on JD(U) ticket from Mahnar assembly constituency but lost to the RJD candidate. He had won the 2015 Bihar Assembly polls from Mahnar defeating his BJP rival then.
