Patna: President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday honoured two students of Nalanda University with gold medals and conferred post-graduate degrees on 12 other students on the first convocation of the university.

The President while addressing the convocation recalled the 800 year old glory of Nalanda University and said the university which was globally rich in education has been revived.He also said in addition to Nalanda, Vikramshila University in Bihar was also a centre of excellence. He said scholars from Greece and Persia came to Nalanda for higher studies and students of ancient Nalanda University had visited China much before the Chinese scholar Huen Tseng came to India.

The President appreciated the role of university in introducing khadi  gowns and regalia for the convocation and said in opting for regalia,Nalanda University has become the first and only Indian university to have its entire academic regalia in the national fabric manufactured in Nalanda only. For students, dark blue khadi gowns with no trim were used during the convocation.

President Mukherjee also laid the foundation of new proposed building of the university. At present, it is functioning from two hotels at tourist place of Rajgir in Nalanda district .

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said the idea of setting up an international university at Nalanda was suggested by the then President A P J Abdul Kalam on March 28, 2006, while addressing a joint session of Bihar legislature. Governor Ram Nath Kovind, Chancellor of university George Yeo, founder chancellor Amaratya Sen, ministers of Bihar, leader of opposition in Bihar assembly Prem Kumar and former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi were present.Vice-Chancellor Gopa Sabharwal, in her welcome address, said students from 90 East Asian countries have been enrolled in the university .

The President conferred gold medals on two students: Sana Salah of Kolkata, and Shashi Ahlawat of Bahadurgarh in Haryana. He also gavecertificates to 12 other students from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand,Bhutan and Japan.
