Gopalganj: Police resorted to lathicharge on agitating traders on January 29 after they traders downed their shutters at Madhopur Bazaar under Madhopur police outpost and blocked Jamo-Barhariya main road for hours placing burning tyres on the road paralysing the movement of vehicles. Locals were agitating against the alleged police atrocities in the name of vehicle checking.
The traders got agitated on January 29 when they came to know that local police have filed an FIR against 25 named persons and 20 unknown persons in connection with January 26 incident. A large number of policemen including Barauli ps SHO, Manjha ps SHO, Sidhwaliya ps SHO and Muhammadpur ps SHO were camping at Madhopur Bazaar.
Sensing the mood of the people, Gopalganj SP Ravi Ranjan along with SDO Mritunjay Kumar reached Madhopur on Sunday and held parleys with the villagers. SP assured the people that that their allegation would be probed. He assured that innocent would not be arrested. After getting assurance from Gopalganj SP, the traders opened their shops.
It may be mentioned here that on January 26, villagers had clashed with the local police alleging the cops were fleecing money in the name of vehicle checking.
