Top seed Thiem survives Alves scare to enter 2nd Rd. of Rio Open, Ruud crashes out

Patna : Top seed Dominic Thiem, 26, Austria, entered the 2nd round of Rio Open, an ATP Tour 500 outdoor clay courts event at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 19, 2020, defeating World No 341 Felipe Meligeni Alves, 21, Brazil, in three-sets in first round.

World No 4 Dominic Thiem beat Wildcard Felipe Meligeni Alves 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in 2hr 04 minutes to enter the 2nd round. The top seed won 4 break points in the match to 1 by Alves. Both the players served 3 Aces each in the match. Thiem won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Brazilian. The Austrian won 53 service points to 43 by Alves. Thiem, in all, won 87 points to 65 by Alves.

But, World No 34 Casper Ruud, 21, Norway, crashed out of the tournament suffering a shock defeat at the hand of World No 128 Gianluca Mager, 25, Italy, in first round. mager beat 8th seed Ruud 7-6, 7-5 winning a break point and 3 games in a row to advance to the second round. The Italian fired 8 Aces in the match to 7 by Ruud, who had won the Argentina Open title on February 16, 2020. Mager, in all, won 87 points to 77 by Ruud.

Fifth seed Borna Coric, 23, Croatia, beat World No 61 Juan Ignacio Londero, 26, Argentina, 7-6, 7-5 firing 9 Aces in the match to enter the second round. Coric won 3 break points to 2 by Londero.He won 5 games in a row to 4 by the Argentinian. Coric, in all, won 77 points in the match to 71 by Londero.
