Patna : World No 5 Dominic Thiem, 26, survived scare before overcoming the challenge thrown by Wild Card entry Alex Bolt, Australia, in a five-set slugfest in second round of Australian Open (AO) 2020 at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on January 23, 2020. After the third set, World No 140 Alex Bolt, 27, was leading 2-1. But, fifth seed Thiem rallied back strongly and was all over Bolt in fourth and fifth sets winning them easily.

Thiem beat Bolt 6-2, 5-7, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 in 3 hr 22 minutes at Melbourne Arena to advance to the third round. The Austrian won 7 break points in the match to 2 by the Australian. Both the players won 5 games each in a row in the match. Bolt though fired 14 Aces in the match to 12 by Thiem. The Austrian won 100 service points to 97 by Wild Card Bolt. Thiem committed 3 double faults to 5 by Bolt.

World No 7 Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany,  beat World No 98 Egor Gerasimov, 27, Belarus, in straights sets 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 at Rod laver Arena to enter the third round. The German fired 10 Aces in the match to 8 by Gerasimov, who committed 4 double faults. Zverev won 3 break points to 1 by Gerasimov. Both the players won 3 games each in the match. Gerasimov won 81 service points to 70 by Zverev.
