Thiem, Fognini, Cecchinato upset in 1st round of Rio Open

Patna : World No 8 in ATP rankings and top seed Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, World No 16 and 2nd seed Fabio Fognini, 31, Italy, and World No 17 and 3rd seed Marco Cecchinato, 26, Italy, suffered shock first round defeat in the Rip Open, an ATP would tour 500 points tennis tournament played on clay court at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 20, 2019.

World No 90 Laslo Djere, 23, Serbia, stunned top seed and 2017 champion Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria,  in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the first round in a massive upset in the tournament. Djere won 5 break points to 2 by Thiem. Djere also won 5 games in a row in the match. Thiem committed 5 double faults in the match compared to 2 by Djere. Djere’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was better than that of Thiem. This is Djere’s first victory over a Top 10 player in his career.

World No 104 Felix Augur-Aliassime, 18, Canada, crushed 2nd seed Fognini 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. Aliassime broke Fognini’s ser vive 3 times in the match. Aliassime also won 5 games in row in the match. His winning percentage on both his first and second serve was also better than that of Fognini.

World No 83 Aljaz Bedene, 29, Slovenia, beat 3rd seed Cecchinato 7-5, 7-6 in the first round in a major upset in the tournament. Bedene won 3 break points to 2 by Cecchinato. He also served 5 Aces in the match to 4 by Cecchinato. Cecchinato committed 5 double faults in the match to 4 by Bedene. Both the players won 3 games each in a row.
