Patna : Second seed Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, won the US Open ( Tennis) men’s singles title defeating 5th seed Alexander Zverec, 23, Germany, in a marathon five-set marathon in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Newyork City, Newyork, USA, on September 14, 2020, coming back from two-set down. Thiem was also 3-5 down in fifth set.

The match lasted 4hrs 1 mts. It is Thiem’s first Grand Slam title. Thiem had lost in the French Open Final in 2018 and 2019 and Australian Open Final in 2020. It was Thiem’s first appearance in US Open Finals. Thiem had also defeated Zverev in Australian Open semi-finals in 2020. He now leads Zverev 8-2 Head to Head having won the last four matches between the two players. Zverev had last defeated Thiem in the finals of Madrid Masters in 2018.

Thiem beat Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 outlasting the 15 Aces hammered by the latter. Thiem fired 8 Aces in the match. The Austrian won 7 break points in the match to 8 by the German. Zverev won 5 games in a row in the match to 4 by the Austrian, a clay court specialist. Thiem won 100 service points to 94 by Zverev. The Austrian, in all, won 163 points to 159 by the German. Zverev committed 15 double faults in the match to 8 by the Austrian. Zverev had defeated 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, Spain, in five-sets in the semi-finals.
