Patna : Switzerland sent World Champion France packing out of UEFA Euro 2020 defeating them in last 16 stage in pelaty shootout as the two team remained locked 3-3 in the match duration at National Arena, Bucharest, Romania, on June 29, 2021, and the match went to extra time. Switzerland beat two-time UEFA Euro champion France 5-4 on penalties to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.

France had topped the Group F while Switzerland was placed third. Switzerland will face Spain in QFs. France’s super star Kylian Mbappe , 22, failed to score in penalty shootout.

France were leading 3-1 till a few minutes before the end but Switzerland scored two late goals to take the match to extra time. Switzerland’s Haris Sferovic, who had scored goal in the 15th minute, scored again in 81st minute. Mario Gavranovic scored the third goal for Switzerland in 90th minute to make it 3-3 and take the match to shootout. For France, Karim Benzema scored goals in 57th minute and 59th minute while Paul Pogba scored in the 75th minute. France were leadind 3-1 after 75 minute.

Four Switzerland players were shown Yellow Cards during the match compared to 3 of France, who had won the UEFA Euro championships in 1984 and 2000.  France committed 14 fouls to 13 by Switzerland.

Three-time champion Spain defeated Croatia 5-3 in extra time in last 16 on June 28, 2021, to reach quarter-finals of the tournament.
