Patna : Sweden defeated South Korea 1-0 in a Group F match of FIFA World Cup 2018 on June 18, 2018, at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Russia, having a capacity to accomodate 44,899 spectators. Defender Andreas Granqvist scored the winning goal for Sweden in the 65th minute through penalty. Nizhny Novgorod Stadium is located on the banks of river Volga.
This was Sweden’s first win in an opening match in the World Cup since beating Mexico 3-0 in 1958. South Korea have for the first time lost their opening match in the World Cup since 1998.
Sweden are making their 12th appearance in the World Cup and have reached the semi-finals four times and were runners up in 1958. South Korea are making their 10th apperance in the World Cup and had reached semi-finals in 2002.
