Bagaha : Sugarcane growers and CPI(ML) activists burnt the effigy of Bihar Sugarcane Development Minister Khurshid alias Feroz Ahmad under the leadership of CPI (ML) leader Bhikhari Prasad and Progressive Sugarcane Growers Front Convenor Nandesh Pandey near Ambedkar statue at Bagaha on December 15, 2018, to press their demand for immediate announcement of sugarcane price for current cane crushing season (2018-2019).

Sugar factories in West Champaran district have not paid the sugarcane price to the farmers saying the government was yet to  announce the sugarcane price for the current season. This has caused hardship to the cane growers who are finding it extremely difficult to meet their household needs and continue cultivation works.

The protester also accused the Sugarcane minister of extending tacit support to the sugar factories. They said that Patna High Court, in its verdict about 10 months back, directed the sugar factories of the state to pay arrear of sugarcane price with interest to sugarcane growers within two months of the verdict. The state government has not done anything on this front, they alleged.
