Patna : World Number 88 Su-Wei Hsieh, Chinese Taipei, stunned Number 3 seed and 2017 Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza, Spain, in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, in a massive upset on January 18, 2018, to enter the third round of Australian Open (AO) 2018 at Melbourne.

Maria Sharapova, Russia, upset Number 14 seed Anastasija Sevastova, Latvia, 6-1, 7-6, to enter the third round. Sevastova had defeated Sharapova in the fourth round inUS Open in 2017. Number 21 seed and former AO Champion Angelique Kerber, Germany, beat Donna Vekic, Croatia, 6-4, 6-1, to enter the third round. NUmber 6 seed Karolina Pliskova defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, Brazil, the world number 70, 6-1, 6-1, to enter the third round.

In the Men’s section, Number 5 seed Dominic Thiem, Austria, beat Denis Kudla, USA, in five sets 6-7, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to enter the third round avoiding a major upset. Czech veteran and former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, 32, also entered the third round beating Guillermo Garcia Lopez, Spain, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
