Students protest poor BSEB class XII results, lathicharged

Patna : The poor pass percentage at the Bihar School Examination Board’s (BSEB) Class XII exams this year led to violent protest by examinees  outside BSEB office, Patna, early May 31, 2017, morning leading to police lathicharge. They pelted stones at the BSEB office following which police resorted to lathicharge on them.

Out of 12.4 lakh examinees in Science, Arts and Commerce streams, only 4.37 lakh ( 35.25 %) could clear the exam the results of which were declared on May 30. In Science stream only 30.11 % students could clear the exam.

Agitating students gained strength after hundreds of supporters of Madhepura MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav joined the protestors. Members of ABVP, student wing of RSS and AISF, Left wing students organisation, sat on dharna at Kargil chowk in support of the examinees.

The examinees gathered at the BSEB office gate forcing all the employees to remain confined inside. The angry ISc examinees, many of whom had qualified for IITJEE (Mains) or other competitive tests but failed in Class 12, demanded that their answer books be shown to them. Others also wanted to know the name of the teachers who had checked their papers.

Some examinees attributed the poor results to evaluation done by primary and secondary level teachers in view of agitation by higher grade teachers during that time.  One of the students from Siwan, who got 291 out of 500 marks, failed in English and chemistry but qualified JEE (Mains).

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar termed the results as an outcome of fair conduct of examination without use of unfair means and strict evaluation of answer-books. The chief minister held meeting with Education minister Ashok Choudhary, Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh and Principal Secretary Education R K Mahajan on the results on  the day. He told reporters after the cabinet meeting that those who think they got less mark could apply for re-evaluation. In addition, compartment examinations would be held soon, the CM added.
Education minister Ashok Choudhary said the examinees could register complaint online after two days from today and board would carry rectification within a month. He said that the BSEB would bend its rule and allow students to take compartment examination in two subjects in place of one allowed earlier and result would be declared within a month.
