Patna : South Africa (SA) defeated England by 107 runs in the 1st Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa, on Day 4 on December 29, 2019, to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Chasing a target of 376 runs, England, who had scored 181 runs in their first innings, were all out for 268 runs in 93 overs with opener Rory Burns scoring 84 runs in 154 balls hitting 11 fours and captain Joe Root scoring 48 runs in 101 balls with 8 fours. England had won the toss and opted to bowl.Quinton de Kock, whohad scored 95 in SA’s first innings and 34 in second innings, was declared Play of The Match.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 4/103 in 24 overs while fellow fast bowler Anrich Nortje took 3/56 in 17 overs. Spinner Keshab Maharaj took 2/37 in 16 overs while Dwaine Pretorius took 1/26 in 16 overs.

Resuming at their overnight score of 121/1, England lost the wicket of Rory Burns at 139. He fell to Anrich Nortje. Joe Denly , who had scored 50in first innings, fell to Dwaine Pretorius for 31 in 79 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes and it was 158/3. Ben Stokes fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 14 making it 204/4. Jonny Bairstow fell to Kagiso Rabada for 9 and it was 222/5. Joe Root soon fell to Nortje making it 232/6.  Sam Curran fell to Rabada for 9 making it 251/7. Jofra Archer fell to Nortje for 4 while Jos Buttler (wk) fell to Rabada for 22 making it 262/9. Stuart Broad fell to Rabada.

SA had scored 284 in their first innings and 272 in their second innings.
