Patna : South Africa defeated Australia by 6 wickets in the first ODI at Perth Stadium, Perth, Australia, on November 4, 2018, riding on brilliant batting by its openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks, who added 94 runs for the first wicket, and equally good bowling by fast bowler Dale Steyn, who was declared Man of the Match. South Africa had won the toss but opted to bowl. Chasing a target of 153, South Africa scored 153/4 in 29.2 overs.

Kock scored 47 in 40 balls with 7 fours while Hendricks scored 44 in 74 balls 4 fours. Aiden Markram made 36 in 32 balls with 6 fours while captain Faf du Plessis remained unbeaten on 10. Heinrich Klaasen was out for two.

For Australia, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis took 3/16 in 4.2 overs while Nathan Coulter- Nile took 1/26 in 3 overs. Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood went wicketless.

Batting first, Australia were all out for only 152 in 38.1 overs with wicketkeeper Alex Carey scoring 33 in 71 balls with 2 fours and Nathan Coulter-Nile scoring 34 in 31 balls with 5 fours and a six. Captain and opener Aaron Finch was out for 5 while his opening partner Travis Head was out for just 1 run. D Arcy Short fell for a duck while Chris Lynn scored 15. Glen Maxwell made 11 while Marcus Stoinis scored 14. Australia lost their first two wickets for 4 only. They had lost six wickets for 66 runs.

For South Africa, Steyn took 2/18 in 7 overs while Lungisani Ngidi took 2/26 in 8.1 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo took 3/33 in 6 overs while spinner Imran Tahir took 2/39 in 9 overs. Pat Cummins was run out.
