Patna : South Africa (SA) were all out for 235 in 59.4 overs in their first innings in the first test against Sri Lanka (SL) on day 1 at Kingsmead, Durban, South Africa, on February 13, 2019, with wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock scoring 80 in 94 balls with 8 fours and a six and Temba Bavuma scoring 47 ( run out) in 66 balls with 7 fours. Captain Faf du Plessis scored 35 in 54 balls with 5 fours while spinner Keshav Maharaj scored 29 in 35 balls with 4 fours.

Sri Lanka won the toss but opted to bowl. Openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar were out for 11 and 0 while Hashim Amla was out for 3 runs making it 17/3. Temba Bavuma and Faf du Plessis added 72 runs for the 4th wicket. Fast bowler Dale Steyn scored 15 runs with 2 fours.

For Sri Lanka, medium fast bowler Vishva Thilina Fernando, 27, took 4/62 while fellow medium fast bowler Kasun Rajitha, 25, took 3/68. Suranga Lakmal and Lasith Embuldniya took one wicket each.

Sri Lanka were 49/1 in 16 overs at stumps on day 1 with opener Dimuth Karunaratne unbeaten on 28 with 3 fours and Oshada Fernando batting on 17 with 2 fours. Opener Lahiru Thirimanne fell to Steyn for zero. Eleven wickets fell on the first day of the match.
