Patna : South Africa were 263/7 at stumps in their first innings against Australia on the second day of second cricket test at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth, on March 10, 2018, courtesy a magnificent batting display by A B de Villiers and dogged batting by Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla. de Villiers was unbeaten on 74 in 81 balls including 14 fours while Vernon Philander was batting on 14 in 39 balls at stumps. The seventh South African fell when the team score was 227.

South Africa have taken a 20 run lead over Australia, who were all out for 243 in their first innings on day one. Australian fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins did not prove to be as effective as was expected of them. Cummins and all rounder Mitchell Marsh took two wickets each while Starc, Hazlewood and spinner Nathan Lyon took one wicket each. Cummins took the wickets of Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada while Starc accounted for Hashim Amla. Hazlewoon took the wicket of opener Dean Elgar.

South African opener Dean Elgar made 57 in 197 balls including 6 fours while Hashim Amla made 56 in 148 balls including 6 four. Elgar and Amla were involved in a 88 run partnership for the third wicket. Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 39/1, South Africa lost night watchman Kagiso Rabada when the score was 67. Rabada made 29 in 40 balls hitting 6 fours. Captain Faf du Plessis and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock scored 9 each. Theunis de Bruyn was out for 1. The South Africa innings comprised 36 fours.
