Patna : South Africa (SA) were 136/6 in 42 overs in their first innings at lunch on Day 3 in the 2nd test against India at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, on October 12, 2019, with captain Faf du Plessis unbeaten on 52 in 76 balls hitting 8 fours and a six and Senuran Muthusamy batting on 6. SA trail by 465 runs staring at a huge defeat. India had declared their first innings at 601/5 in the 3rd session of play on Day 2.

Resuming at their overnight score of 36/3, SA lost three wickets that of nightwatchman Anrich Nortje (3), Theunis de Bruyn ( 30) and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (31) in the first session of the play on Day 3. Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, and Ravichandra Ashwin took one wicket each.

Faf du Plessis hit spinner Ravindra Jadeja for three fours in his 7th over to reach his 21st test fifty. Earlier, he had hit Jadeja for a six in his 5th over. Jadeja has so far bowled 9 over six of which were maiden. He is yet to take a wicket.
