Patna : Steven Smith scored 211 in 319 balls with 24 fours and 2 sixes as Australia declared their 1st innings at 497/8 in 126 overs in the 4th Ashes Test against England at Emirates Old Traffiord, Manchester, UK, on Day 2 on September 5, 2019, night. It was Smith’s 26th test century and 3rd in the on going series. Smith fell to England captain Joe Root.

Fast bowler Mitchell Strac, playing his first test in the series, remained unbeaten on 54 in 58 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes while spinner Nathan Lyon remained not out on 26 in 26 balls with 4 fours. Smith added 145 runs with Tim Paine ( captain & wk). Paine fell to fast bowler Craig Overton for 58 in 127 balls with 8 fours.

For England, fast bowler Sturart Broad took 3/97 in 25 overs while Overton took 2/85 in 28 overs. Spinner Jack Leach took 2/83 in 26.1 overs.

England were 23/1 in their first innings after 10 overs at stumps on Day 2.  Opener Joe Denly fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 4. Opener Rory Burns was unbeaten on 15 while nightwatchman Craig Overton was 3 not out.  England trail by 474 runs.
