England were 17/2 after 8.4 overs but Joe Root and Bairstow steadied the innings adding 110 runs in their unbroken partnership for the third wicket.

Opener Dominic Sibley fell to spinner Lasith Embuldeniya for 4 making it 10/1. Opener Zak Crawley fell to Lasith Embuldeniya for 9 and it was 17/2. Embuldeniya opened the attack for SL. England trail by 8 runs. Twelve wickets fell on Day 1.

Earlier opting to bat after winning the toss, SL put up a pathetic show and were 25/3 after 10.2 overs. Captain Dinesh Chandimal top scored with 28 in 71 balls with just 1 fours while Angelo Mathews scored 27 in 54 balls a four and a six. Dasun Shanaka scored 23 while opener Kusal Perera scored 20 runs.
