Patna : P V Sindhu, 26, India, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist, defeated Akane Yamaguchi, 24, Japan, in straight games in women’s singles Badminton quarter-final on July 30, 2021, to reach semi-finals at Tokyo Olympics to seal a podium finish. Reigning World Champion Sindhu beat Yamaguchi 21-13, 22-20 in QF in 56 minutes and is now assured of winning at least a bronze medal.
Sindhu won the first game in 23 minutes but took 33 minutes to win the second game with Yamaguchi putting up a tremendous fight. Yamaguchi, who was trailing 8-14 in second game surged ahead and even had two game points. But, Sindhu fought back, saved two match points, and won the game. 22-20
