Patna : World N0 24 in WTA rankings Daria Gavrilova, 24, Australia, stunned World N0 3 Garbine Muguruza, 24, Spain, in the second round of Italian Open on May 17, 2018. Gavrilova upset reigning Wimbledon Champion Muguruza 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 at Foro Italico, Rome.

World N0 26 Anett Kontaveit, 22, Estonia, upset World N0 9 Venus Williams, 37, 6-2, 7-6, to enter the quarterfinals of Italian Open, a clay court tournament. World N0 12 Angelique Kerber, Germany, also entered the quarterfinals defeating World No 42 Maria Sakkari, 22, Greece, 6-1, 6-1, in the third round. World No 1 Simona Halep also entered the qurterfinals after her opponent in the third round Madison Keys, 23, USA, retired, before the start of the match.

World N0 4 Elina Svitolina, 23, Ukraine,, defeated World N0 13 Daria Kasatkina, 21, Russia, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, to enter the quarterfinals. Svitolina will play Kerber in the quarterfinals on May 18. World N0 7 Jelena Ostapenko, 21, defeated Johanna Konta,  26, UK, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to enter the quarterfinals of the tournament.
