Patna : World No 5 Dominic Thiem, 26, Austria, World No 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 21, Greece, and World No 28 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, advanced to the Round of 16 of Rolex Paris Masters at Bercy, Paris, France on October 30, 2019, winning their respective 2nd round matches.
Fifth seed Thiem, who won China Open and Vienna Open titles in October 2019, edged past 2016 Wimbledon finalist and World No 32 Milos Raonic, 28, Canada, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 in 2hr 38 minutes in 2nd round. Raonic though hammered 30 Aces in the match to just 4 by Thiem. But, the Canadian also committed 7 double faults to 2 by the Austrian. Both the players won 1 break point each in the match. Both of them won 3 games each in a row in the match.
Tsitsipas, the 7th seed, beat World No 33 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, 7-6, 6-3 in 73 minutes in 2nd round. The Greek fired 13 Aces in the match to 5 by the American. Shapovalov upset World No 12 Fabio Fognini, 32, Italy, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in 1hr 42 minutes in 2nd round. Shapovalov hammered 14 Aces in the match to 2 by Fognini, the winner of Monte-Carlo Masters title this year. The Canadian won 4 break points to 2 by the Italian.
World No 42 Cristian Garin, 23, Chile, upset World No 17 John Isner, 34, USA, 7-6, 7-6 to enter the Round of 16. Isner though hammered 25 Aces in the match to 6 by Garin.
