Patna : World No 16 in WTA rankings and winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles including 7 Australian Open (AO) titles Serena Williams, 37, upset World No 1 Simona Halep, 27, Romania, in a tough three-set contest to enter the quarter-finals of Australian Open 2019 on January 21, 2019. Serena now leads Halep 9-2 head to head.
Serena beat Halep 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the fourth round at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia. Serena will play World No 8 Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, in the quarter-finals on January 23, 2019. Serena had won her first Australian Open title in 2003.
Serena was all over Halep in the first set winning it 6-1 but rallied back strongly to take the second set 6-4. The third set witnessed a fierce contest though Serena finally prevailed 6-4.
