Patna : Sathish Kumar Sivalingam, 25, India, won the gold medal in 77 kg men’s weightlifting category at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2018 on April 7, 2018. The boy from Sathuvachari, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Sathish lifted a total of 317 kg – 144 kg in snatch and 173 kg in clean & jerk- to clinch the gold medal. Satish lifted 144 kg in snatch in his third attempt. With this India’s gold medal tally at Gold Coast CWG increased to three.

Sathish,  son of an ex-serviceman Sivalingam, is an employee of Southern Railways, Chennai,Tamil Nadu. His mother’s name is Deivanai. Sathish’s father now works as a security guard at VIT University, Vellore. 

Sathish had also won gold medal at Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 in 77 kg category. He had lifted 149 kg in snatch and 179 kg in clean & jerm at Glasgow CWG in 2014. He could not better his Glasgow CWG record. Sathish had finished 11th in 77 kg weightlifting category at 2016 Rio Olympics.
