Patna South Africa (SA) defeated Australia by 74 runs in the 1st ODI at Boland Park, Paarl, SA, on February 29, 2020, late night, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing a target of 292 runs, Australia were all out for 217 in 45.1 overs with fast bowler Lungi Ngidi taking 3/30 in 8 overs while fellow fast bowler Anrich Nortje took 2/39 in 7.1 overs. Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi took 2/45 in 10 overs while Keshav Maharaj took 1/48 in 10 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo also took a wicket.SA batsman Heinrich Klaasen was declared Player of The Match.

chasing the target, Australia lost the wickets of openers David Warner (25) and captain Aaaron Finch (10) with 49 runs on board. But, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the innings adding 84 runs for 3rd wicket. Labuschagne fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 41 in 51 balls with 2 fours.

Mitchell Marsh fell to Ngidi for 16 making it 174/4. He added 41 runs with Smith for 5th wicket. Smith also fell at the same score to Nortje for 76 in 94 balls with 3 fours and it was 174/5. Alex Carey (wk) fell to spinner Shamsi for 5 making it 195/6. Mitchell Starc was run out for 5 making it 203/7.  D Arcy Short also fell to Shamsi for 18 and it was 207/8. fast bowler Pat Cummins fell to Phehlukwayo for 6 and it was 211/9. Josh Hazlewood fell to Nortje for 1.

Earlier opting to bat after winning the toss, SA had scored 291/7 in 50 overs with Heinrich Klaasen scoring an unbeaten 123 in 114 balls hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes while David Miller scored 64 in 70 balls with 4 fours and a six. Kyle Verreynne scored 48 in 64 balls with 2 fours.
