Patna : South Africa (SA) were 385/8 in their first innings at stumps on Day 3 in the 1st Test against India at Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on October 4, 2019, with opener Dean Elgar, 32,  scoring a splendid 160 in 287 balls with 18 fours and 4 sixes, his 12th test ton,  and Quinton de Kock (wk), 26,  scoring 111 in  163 balls with 16 fours and 2 sixes , his 4th test century, displaying a great fightback from being 39/3 at stumps on Day 2. SA trail by 117 runs.

For India, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 5/128 in 41 overs while Ravindra Jadeja took 2/116 in 37 overs. Fast bowler Ishant Sharma took 1/44 in 14 overs. Jadeja has now taken 200 wickets in tests in 44 tests, the fewest to reach attain the feat. Ashwin has taken five wickets in an innings for 27th time.

Resuming at their overnight score of 39/3, SA added 346 runs to their score with two wickets still in hand. They scored runs at a faster pace. Indian bowlers could ake only 5 wickets on Day 3. SA captain Faf du Plessis fell toAshwin for 55 in 103 balls with 8 fours and a six.
