Patna : South Africa (SA) were 215/8 in 88.4 overs at stumps in their first innings in the 2nd test against England at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on Day 2 on January 4, 2020, with Vernon Philander is unbeaten on 13 in 49 balls. South Africa are still 54 runs behind England’s first innings total of 269. Resuming at their overnight score of 262/9, England were all out for 269 in 91.5 overs soon after start of the first session of play on Day 2.
South Africa had lost their first three wickets that of opener Pieter Malan (5), Zubayr Hamza (5), and captain Faf du Plessis (1) with only 40 runs on board. But opener Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen steadied the innings adding 117 runs for the 4th wicket. Elgar fell to spinner Dom Bess for 88 in 180 balls with 10 fours and it was 157/4.
Quinton de Kock added 34 runs for 5th wicket with Dussen. But, Kock fell to Sam Curran for 20 in 26 balls with 2 fours making it 191/5. Soon , Rassie van der Dussen fell to Sam Curran for 68 in 187 balls with 7 fours, his 2nd test fifty, and it was 200/6. Dwaine Pretorius fell to James Anderson for 1 making it 207/7. Spinner Keshav Maharaj also fell to Anderson for 4 and it 215/8.
For England, James Anderson took 3/34 while Sam Curran took 2/39. Stuart Broad took 2/36 while Dominic Bess took 1/62.
