Patna : South Africa (SA) were 126/4 in 37 overs in their second innings in the first test against Sri Lanka (SL) at stumps on day 2 at Kingsmead, Durban, South Africa, on February 14, 2019, with captain Faf du Plessis batting on 25 in 56 balls with 4 fours and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock batting on 15 in 15 balls with 1.

Openers Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram scored 35 and 28 runs respectively while Hashim Amla scored 16. Temba Bavuma fell to spinner Lasitha Embuldeniya for 3. Embuldeniya took 2/36. South Africa lead by 170 runs.

Earlier on the day, Sri Lanka were all out for 191 in 59.2 overs with Kusal Perera scoring 51 in 63 balls with 7 fours and a six and opener Dumuth Karunaratne scoring 30 in 59 balls with 3 fours. Kusal Mendis fell to medium fast bowler Vernon Philander for 12. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella fell to fast bowler Duanne Olivier for 8. Dhananjaya de Silva fell to fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for 23 in 33 balls with 3 fours and a six. Lasith Embuldeniya also fell to Rabada for 24 with 4 fours. Kasun Rajitha was run out for 12.

For South Africa, fast bowler Dale Steyn took 4/48 in 20 overs while Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander took two wickets each. Dunanne Olivier took 1/36.

South Africa had scored 235 runs in their first innings.
