Patna : South Africa defeated Australia by 40 runs in the 3rd ODI at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, Australia, on November 11, 2018, riding on 125 in 114 balls with 15 fours and 2 sixes by captain Faf du Plessis and 139 in 108 balls with 13 fours and 4 sixes by all-rounder David Miller. Faf du Plessis and Miller added 252 runs for the 4th wicket. South Africa wrapped the three-match ODI series 2-1. Miller was declared Player of the Match as well as Player of the Series.
Australia had won the toss but opted to bowl. South Africa scored 320/5 in 50 overs including 75 in last 5 overs. South Africa had, however, lost their first three wickets for 55 runs only in 15.3 overs. Wicketkeeper and opener Quinton de Kock fell to Starc for 4 while his opening partner Reeza Hendricks fell to Stoinis for 8. Aiden Markram fell to Starc for 32 with 3 sixes and a four. But, thereafter du Plessis and Miller were all over the Australian bowlers particularly fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Marcus Stoinis. du Plessis and Miller had strike rate of 109.65 and 128.7 respectively.
For Australia, Starc took 2/57 in 10 overs, Hazlewood 1/53 in 10 overs, and Stoinis 2/70 in 7 overs. Pat Cummins conceded 67 runs in his 10 overs but went wicketless.
Chasing a target of 321, Australia scored 280/9 in 50 overs with Shaun Marsh scoring 106 with 7 fours and 4 sixes and Stoinis 63 with 5 fours and 4 sixes. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey made 42 with a four and a six while Glen Maxwell made 35 with 3 fours. Open Chris Lynn was out for a duck his opening partner and captain Aaron Finch was out for 11. Travis Head made 6. Australia had lost their first three wickets for 39 runs.
For South Africa, fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada took three wickets each while Lungisani Ngidi took one wicket. All-rounder Dwaine Pretorious took two wickets while spinner Imran Tahir took one wicket.
