Patna : South Africa were all out for 286 in 73.1 overs on the first day of first test against India at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 5, 2018. For India, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took 4/87 and R Ashwin 2/21. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohd Shami took one wicket each. Spinner Keshav Maharaj was run out for 35.

Former South Africa Captain A B de Villiers was the top scorer with 65 in 84 balls hitting 11 fors while Captain Faf du Plessis made 62 in 104 balls hitting 12 fours. A B de Villiers and Faf du Plessis were involved in a fourth wicket partnership of 114 runs. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Cock made 43 in 40 balls hiting 7 fours while fast bowler Vernon Philander made 23 in 35 balls hitting 4 fours and were involved in a partnership of 60 runs sixth wicket.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada made 26 while Morne Morkel made two. Fast bowler Dale Steyn remained unbeaten on 16. Hashim Amla was out for three while opener Dean Elgar failed to open his account. Aiden Markram made 5.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar took the wickets of Elgar, Markram, Amla and Quinton de Cock while Ashwin took the wickets of Rabada and Morkel. Bumrah took the wicket of A B de Villiers. Faf du Plessis was out to Hardik Pandya while Shami took the wicket of Philander.
