Patna : South Africa, who won the toss and elected to bat, were 269/6 in 90 overs at stumps on day one of the second cricket test against India at SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa, on January 13, 2018, with Captain Faf du Plessis batting on 24 in 77 balls and spinner Keshav Maharaj unbeaten on 10.
The first South African wicket fell at 85 when opener Dean Elgar was out for 31 to R Ashwin while the second wicket fell at 148 when his partner Aiden Markram was out for 94 in 150 balls to Ashwin. The third South African wicket fell at 199 when A B de Villers was bowled by Ishant Sharma for 20. Hashim Amla was run out by Hardik Pandya for 82 in 153 balls when the score was 246. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Cock was out without scoring to Ashwin when the score was 250. Vernon Philander too was run out by Pandya for duck when the score was 251. Ashwin took 3/90 in 31 overs while Ishant Sharma took 1/32 in 16 overs.
India made three changes to the team that played the first test at Cape Town by bringing in K L Rahul, Parthiv Patel and Ishant Sharma dropping Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, who had taken six wickets in the first test and scored vital runs, Shikhar Dhawan and injured wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
