Qualifier Portero enters QFs of Rio Open

Patna : Qualifier Pedro Martinez Portero, 22, Spain, upset World No 59 Pablo Andujar, 34, Spain, in straight sets in second round to enter the quarter-finals of Rio Open, an ATP Tour 500 played on outdoor clay courts at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 20, 2020.

World No  133 Portero beat Andujar 6-1, 6-4 in second round winning 3 break points besides winning 5 games in a row in the match. Portero won 38 service points to 25 by Andujar. Qualifier Portero, in all, won 60 points to 42 by Andujar. He fired 4 Aces in the match to 1 by Andujar.

Portero will face lucky loser & World No 106 Attila Balazs, 31, Hungary, in QFs on February 22, 2020. Balazs defeated World No 88 Thiago Monteiri, 25, Brazil, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in second round rallying back from one set down.

Third seed Cristian Garin, 23, Chile, beat World No 86 Federico Delbonis, 29, Argentina, 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hr 36 minutes winning 3 break points besides winning 3 games in a row in second round to enter the QFs of the event. Garin, in all, won 71 points to 57 by Delbonis. The Argentinian though won 44 service points to 36 by Garin. The third seed fired 6 Aces in the match to 1 by the Argentinian. Garin will face Federico Coria, Argentina, in QFs on February 21.
