Qualifier Marius Copil stuns World No 6 in ATP Swiss Indoors

Patna : Qualifier and World No 93 Marius Copil, 28, Romania, stunned World No 6 and former US Open champion Marin Cilic, 30, Coatia, in the Round of 16 in Swiss Indoors tennis tournament, an ATP 500 points event, at Basel, Switzerland, on October 25, 2018, to enter the quarter-finals.

Copil beat Cilic in straight sets 7-6, 7-6 in a massive upset in the tournament. Copil, who had lost in the first round of French Open, Wimbledon, US Open in 2018, hammered 21 Aces in the match to just 4 by Cilic, who committed 6 double faults. Copil won 3 games in a row besides winning a break points in the match.

World No 20 Daniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, beat World No 43 Andreas Seppi, 34, Italy, 7-6, 6-2, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. Medvedev served 6 Aces in the match to just 1 by Seppi. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. But, Medvedev won 3 break points to just 1 by Seppi. Both the players won 3 games in row each.

World No 16 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, beat World No 60 Peter Gojowczyk, 29, Germany, 6-3, 6-1 to enter the quarter-finals of the event. Tsitsipas fired 10 Aces in the match to just 2 by Gojowczyk. Gojowczyk committed 5 double faults to 1 by Tsitsipas, who won 4 break points. Tsitsipas won 5 games in a row too.

World No 57 Taylor Fritz, 20, USA, beat World No 175 Henri Laaksonen, 26, Switzerland, 6-2, 7-5 to enter the quarter-finals. Laaksonen fired 7 Aces in the match to 5 by Fritz. But, Laaksonen committed 7 double faults to 3 by Fritz. Fritz won 4 break points to just 1 by Laaksonen. Fritz will play Marius Copil in the QF.
