Patna : World No 65 Jeremy Chardy, 32, France, stunned World No 4 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, in second round of ATP Rolex Paris Masters at Bercy, Paris, France, on October 30, 2019, early morning, to advance to Round of 16 of the tournament. Chardy, a qualifier, upset 4th seed Medvedev in three-sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in 2hrs 6 minutes rallying back from one set down. Medvedev had won ATP Shanghai Masters title on October 13, 2019. He had also won Cincinnati Masters and had reached final of 6 tournament this year.

Medvedev though hammered 11 Aces in the match to none by Chardy. But, Chardy won 3 break points to 1 by the Russian. Both the players committed 2 double faults each. The French won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Russian. Incidentally, Medvedev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (77% & 48%) was higher than that of Chardy ( 74 % & 42%). Chardy, however, won 64 service points to 53 by Medvedev. Defending champion and 8th seed Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, had also lost in 2nd round to World No 36 Jan-Lennard Struff, 29, Germany, on October 29, 2019, night.

World No 6 Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, who had lost to Medvedev in the final of Shanghai Masters, advanced to Round of 16 defeating World No 49 Fernando Verdasco, 35, Spain, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in 56 minutes in 2nd round. Sixth seed Zverev fired 8 Aces in the match to 3 by the Spaniard. The German won 4 break points in the match to none by Verdasco. Zverev also won 10 games in a row in the match.
