Ara : An undertrial prisoner of Ara jail died at Sadar Hospital, Ara, on April 26, 2018, late evening, during treatment. He was administered oxygen and saline drip for three hours after his death. Even the order of the Deputy Superintendent, Ara Sadar Hospital, had no meaning as no one bothered to take care of the ailing undertrial prisoner.
Bhojpur police had arrested Nanak Teli from village Dhuns under Bihia police station for allegedly boozing on April, 23, 2018. He fell ill on April 24 and was admitted to Ara Sadar Hospital for treatment.
The hospital administration kept him in the prisoners’ ward at the hospital and administered oxygen and saline. His condition deteriorated in the evening on April 26 during treatment and he died but the hospital staff remained indifferent even after other patients made hullabaloo saying the patient had died. No doctor came to examine him. Not only this, oxygen and saline drip were administered for three hours after his death. When a Havildar on duty took up the matter with hospital staff, a nurse came around 9 pm and removed the oxygen and saline.
Deputy Superintendent (DS), Ara Sadar Hospital, Dr Satish Kumar Sinha said that as he came to know about the death of the patient, he immediately ordered the employees to do the needul. Dr Sinha said action would be taken against the guilty employees. Other patients at Ara Sadar hospital said that they had informed the doctors and nurses that Nanak Teli had died around 5 pm but no one responded.
Ara Jail Superintendent Niranjan Pandit said that Nanak Teli was ill and was admitted to Ara Sadar Hospital for treatment on time. He said that a team has been constituted to inquire into the incident and the body would be handed over to the family members after post-mortem.
Havildar Heera Lal Paswan and a guard Ashok Sharma on duty said that the condition of the prisoner was not so bad when they brought him over to the Ara Sadar Hospital but due to apathetic attitude of the doctors, the condition of the prisoner deteriorated and he died. They said that they informed the DS but he neither sent a doctor nor shifted the patient to the emergency ward.
