Patna : World No 84 Prajnesh Gunneswaran, 29, India, a qualifier, crashed out of Miami Open at Florida, USA, in the first round losing to World No 61 Jaume Munar, 21, Spain, on March 22, 2019, but World No 155 David Ferrer, 36, Spain, a French Open finalist in 2013 and winner of 27  career titles, defeated World No 68 Sam Querrey, 31, USA, to enter the 2nd round of the tournament.

Munar defeated Prajnesh in a tough contest 7-6, 6-4 in the first round. Munar broke Prajnesh’s service thrice while the latter broke his service twice. Prajnesh committed 5 double faults to 2 by Munar. Prajnesh served 4 Aces in the match to 3 by Munar. Munar’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 83% & 66%) was better than that of Prajnesh ( 67% & 55%). Munar also won 5 games in a row to 3 by Prajnesh, who had reached 3rd round of Indian Wells Masters at California, USA, recently.

Ferrer, a former World No 3, beat Querrey 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hr 14 minutes in the first round. Ferrer broke Querrey’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service once. Querrey fired 8 Aces in the match but also committed 6 double faults. Ferrer also won 4 games in a row in the match. Ferrer won 38 service points to 31 by Querrey.

World No 58 Reilly Opelka, 21, USA, upset World No 45 Jan-Lennard Struff, 28, Germany, in three-sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round. Opelka hammered 25 Aces in the match to 8 by Struff. Opelka broke Struff’s service twice while the latter broke his service once. Opelka committed 3 double faults to 1 by Opelka. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Opelka won 60 service points to 53 by Struff.

World No 94 Feliciano Lopez, 37, Spain, defeated World No 67 Benoit Paire, 29, France, in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in 2 hr 20 minutes to enter the 2nd round. Paire though fired 14 Aces in the match to 9 by Lopez. Paire committed 9 double faults to 7 by Lopez. Lopez broke Paire’s service twice while the latter broke his service once. Both the players won 72 service points each in the match. They also won 3 games each in a row.

World No 57 Felix Auger-Aliassime, 18, Canada, a qualifier, entered the 2nd round defeating World No 98 Caspur Ruud, 20, Norway, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. Aliassime fired 8 Aces in the match to 2 by Ruud. Aliassime broke Rudd’s service 6 times while the latter broke his service 3 times in the match.

World No 88 Pablo Andujar, 33, Spain, beat World No 76 Ivo Karlovic, 40, Croatia, 7-6, 6-4 to enter the 2nd round of the event. Karlovic though fired 14 Aces in the match to none by Andujar. Andujar broke Karlovic’s service once in the match. Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. Andujar won 52 service points to 48 by Karlovic.
