Patna : A Hazaribagh court on May 23, 2017, sentenced senior RJD leader and former MP from Maharajganj, Bihar, Prabhunath Singh, 63, to life imprisonment in the then Masrakh ( Saran) MLA Ashok Singh murder case of 1995. The court also sentenced to life imprisonment to two others including Prabhunath’s brother Deenanath Singh in the case. They were convicted by the court in the case on May 18, 2017.
Patna high court had transferred the case to Hazaribagh district in 1997 when Bihar was undivided. Ashok Singh had defeated Prabhunath Singh in 1995 Bihar assembly polls from Masrakh as Janata Dal candidate. Ashok was shot dead at his Patna residence.
Prabhunath Singh had won Maharajganj parliamentary seat in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2013 bypoll. He won the seat on JD(U) ticket in 1998, 1999 and 2004 and on RJD ticket in 2013 by poll.
