Patna : World No 10 Pornpawee Chochuwong, 23, Thailand, upset World No 7 P V Sindhu, 26, India, in a three-game thriller in a Group stage match at HSBC BWF World Tour Finals at Bali, Indonesia, on December 3, 2021. Sindhu though has reached the semi-finals by winning her first two Group stage matches.
Pornpawee, who reached the final of All England Open in 2021, defeated reigning World Champion Sindhu 21-12, 19-21, 21-14 in 71 minustes. Pornpawee won 61 points during the match to 47 points by Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist. Both the players won 4 consecutive points each during the match. Pornpawee will face A N Seyoung, 19, South Korea, in semi-final on December 4, 2021.
World No 3 Akane Yamaguchi, 24, Japan, beat World No 12 Busanan Ongbamrungphan, 25, Thailand, in straight games 21-18, 21-18 in 41 minutes in a Group stage match on December 3, 2021. The Japanese won 42 points in the match to 36 by Busanan. Yamaguchi will face Sindhu isn semi-finals on December 4, 2021.
