New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 19, 2021, has expressed deep grief over the passing away of legendary athlete Milkha Singh, 91, who was also known as The Flying Sikh. PM Modi described him as a colossal sportsperson who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said, “In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away.

I had spoken to Shri Milkha Singh Ji just a few days ago. Little did I know that it would be our last conversation. Several budding athletes will derive strength from his life journey. My condolences to his family and many admirers all over the world.”

It may be mentioned here that track and field sprinter Milkha Singh, who died due to Covid-19 on June 18, 2021, was a four-time Asian Games Gold Medallist including in 200m & 400 m at Tokyo in 1958 and 400 m & 4X 400 m relay at Jakarta in 1962. Milkha Singh will always be remembered for is his fourth-place finish in the 400 metres final at the 1960 Olympic Games. His wife Nirmal Kaur had also died recently due to Covid-19.
