Patna : Electing to bat after winning the toss, Pakistan were 145/3 in 58 overs in their first innings at stumps on Day 1 in the 2nd test against South Africa (SA) at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on February 4, 2021, as captain Babar Azam and Fawad Alam added 123 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 4th wicket. The 3rd session of the play on Day 1 was washed out due to rain. Pakistan lead the two-test series 1-0.

At stumps, Babar Azamwas unbeaten on 77 in 125 balls with 12 fours, his 15th test fifty,  while Fawad Alam was batting on 42 in 138 balls hitting 5 fours in a great fightback after being reduced to 22/3 after 14.5 overs. Pakistan lost two wickets with only 21 runs on board. Opener Imran Butt fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj for 15 making it 21/1. Azhar Ali also fell to Keshav Maharaj for zero at the same score making it 21/2. Opener Abid Ali fell to fast bowler Anrich Nortje for 6 and it was 22/3.
