Patna : Indian Well Open Masters 1000 champion  and World Number 22 Naomi Osaka, 20, Japan, beat former World Number 1 Serena Williams, 36, USA, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of Miami Open Master 1000 at Crandon Park Tennis Centre, Miami, USA, on March 21, 2018.

Serena, winner of 23 Grand Slam women singles title, had also made an early exit in the Indian Wells Open recently. Osaka always wanted to play Serena, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova. Serena, at present ranked 491, is making a comeback after birth of her first child in 2017.

World Number 3 and third seed Garbine Muguruza entred the third round of Miami Open after teenage tennis sensation Amanda Anisimova, 16, USA, retired from their second round contest on March 21, 2018, due to foot injury.  Wimbledon Champion Muguruza had lost in the second round of Indian Wells Open. Anisimova is reigning Junior US Open Champion. She had reached 4th round of Indian Wells Open and had upset former Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova, the World Number 9 in WTA rankings, there.

Victoria Azarenka, Belarus, 28, entered the second of Miami Open defeating World Number 172  Catherine Cartan Bellis, 18, USA,  6-3, 6-0, in the first round on March 21.
