Samastipur : A youth Jitendra Kumar was killed and 25 others including 15 policemen were injured during a clash between police and villagers at Tajpur under Tajpur police station in Samastipur district on October 20, 2017. Jitendra was allegedly killed in firing though Samastipur SP Dipak Ranjan claimed that no one had been killed in police firing.

The villagers were protesting the murder of a medicine shop owner Janardan Thakur, 58, near river Jamuari around 9.30 pm on October 18, 2017, when he was returning to his native Ashrahi on his bicycle after closing his shop at Tajpur. The SHO of Tajpur police station Manoj Kumar was suspended on October 19 for dereliction of duty.

But, a furious mob set afire five police vehicles, attacked Tajpur police station pelting the cops with stones and allegedly even beat some of them on October 20 morning. Tajpur market remained closed on October 20 while the protesters resorted to arson on NH 28. Police sources claimed that there were some miscreants in the mob who resorted to firing. Samastipur SP only said that one person was killed in Tajpur incident.

Prohibitory order was enforced in entire Tajpur area following the October 20 incident. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar directed Commissioner, Tirhut Division, and the Range DIG to visit the spot to inquire into the incident and submit their report at the earliest. DGP P K Thakur, who reviewed the situation at Tajpur at a high level meeting at Police Headquaters, Patna, directed the Muzaffarpur Zone IG and Range DIG to camp at  Samastipur till the situation returns to normal.
