Patna : New Zealand (NZ) were 216/5 in 71.1 overs in their first innings in 1st Test against India at stumps on Day 2 on February 22, 2020, at Basin Reserve, Wellington, NZ, with B J Watling (wk) unbeaten on 14 and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme batting on 4. Fast bowler Ishant Sharma took 3/31 in 15 overs while Mohammad Shami and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took one wicket each. NZ lead by 51 runs.

NZ lost their first wicket at 26 when opener Tom Latham fell to Ishant Sharma for 11. Opener Tom Blundell and captain Kane Williamson then added 47 runs for the 2nd wicket. Blundell also fell to Sharma for 30 in 80 balls with 4 fours making it 73/2. Williamson and Ross Taylor, who is playing his 100th test, added 93 runs for the 3rd wicket. Taylor fell to Sharma for 44 in 71 balls with 6 fours and a six. Williamson fell to Mohammad Shami for 89 in 153 balls with 11 fours and it was 185/4. Henry Nicholls fell to Ashwin for 17 making it 207/5.

Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 122/5, India were all out for just 165 in 68.1 overs losing their last five wickets adding just 43 runs. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was top scorer for India with 46 runs in 138 balls hitting 5 fours, Rishabh Pant (wk) was run out for 19 while Mohammad Shami scored 21 runs in 20 balls with 3 fours. Ishant Sharma made 5 while Ravichandran Ashwin was out for a duck.

For NZ, Tim Southee took 4/49 while debutant Kyle Jamieson took 4/39. Trent Boult took 1/57.
